Use of the Afrobarometer network’s data: Beninese journalists receive tools from IREEP

The Institute for Empirical Research in Political Economy (IREEP in French) organized on the 8th of April at ENEAM in Cotonou, a training workshop for journalists for the use of data collected from the Afrobarometer network’s surveys. The workshop was conducted by researchers and staff from IREEP and Afrobarometer.

The training workshop is part of an awareness program on the use of data collected by the Afrobarometer network. Around twenty (20) journalists attended the training whose purpose was for the Institute for Empirical Research in Political Economy (IREEP) to show trainees how to extract pertinent information from the data collected from the Afrobarometer network’s survey.

Three presentations and practical exercises enabled participants to fully understand the Afrobarometer network, IREEP and the use of data collected during public opinion surveys. The first presentation was about public opinion surveys in general. The second one introduced the Afrobarometer network and the third presentation dwelled on the techniques used to analyse survey results.

Participants admitted having received knowledge that will help them improve on their work. They also promised using the data from the Afrobarometer network’s surveys and wished to establish strong links with IREEP.

Afrobarometer is an independent and non-partisan research project that assesses Africa’s social, political and economic atmosphere. The project stems from a desire to publish reliable data on public opinion to decision makers. It conducts opinion surveys every other year and obtains funding from international fundraising.

IREEP is an international institute led by Professor Léonard Wantchékon. It is located at ENEAM and provides technical assistance to the francophone countries of the Afrobarometer.
